About Stadium

A multipurpose indoor sports and entertainment arena located in downtown Newark, New Jersey, the Prudential Center serves primarily as the home of the National Hockey league’s  New Jersey Devils.

The arena was designed by famous architect firm HOK Sport, now known as Populous, while the exterior of the building was constructed by the design firm, Morris Adjmi Architects.

In addition to being the home of the National Hockey League’s New jersey Devils the arena also serves as the home court for Seton Hall University’s men’s basketball team.

The stadium was originally built during a time that many rumors were swirling about the New Jersey Devils relocating. The stadium was a big part of getting the Devils to stay in New Jersey.

History

• Construction of the stadium took a few weeks over two years with ground being broke on the stadium on October 3, 2005 and then opened October 25, 2007.

• The team struggled with attendance for many years, including the years that the franchise was very successful. The team won the Stanley Cup in 1995 in the middle of rumors that they may be moving to Nashville, but the move never developed and Nashville got an expansion team.

• The naming rights to the arena were purchased by Prudential Financial in January of 2007 at a price of $105.3 million over 20 years, which massively discounted the cost that the city of Newark had to spend on the project.

• The New Jersey Devils played their first game at the Prudential Center on October 27, 2007, two days after the stadium had been opened by a Newark Boys Chorus performance.
