U.S. Bank Stadium is an indoor stadium that’s currently under construction in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and will be the future home of the National Football League’s Minnesota Vikings starting with the 2016 season.

The new stadium is being built to replace the Vikings’ old home field, the Metrodome, which they played in from 1982 till 2013. During U.S. Bank Stadium’s construction they’ve been playing their home games at the University of Minnesota’s football stadium, TCF Bank Stadium.

It’s the first fixed roof NFL stadium built since 2002 when Ford Field was built in Detroit as the home field of the Lions. The total estimated price tag of the new stadium is $1.061 billion. The naming rights owned by U.S. Bank were purchased for $220 million over 25 years.

The new stadium has a very unique design to it which makes it very distinguishable. Its shape resembles that of a Viking boat, with a sharp point at one end. Large glass windows allow a lot of natural light to fill the stadium.

History

• The city and the Vikings jointly announced their new proposal for plans for a stadium on April 19, 2007. In addition to a new stadium for the Vikings, the plans included upgrades to the surrounding urban neighborhoods, hotels, light fail, and residential units.

• An agreement on the proposal for the stadium was finally reached on March 1, 2012, pending the formal approval of the Minneapolis City Council and the State Legislature. The original cost was estimated to be $975 million, with half of the funding coming from public funds.

• The Vikings are scheduled to open their brand new U.S. Bank Stadium on September 18, 2016 against division rival Green Bay Packers.

• The new layout and design of the stadium was unveiled to the public by HKS Sports & Entertainment Group, the Vikings, and the Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority on May 13, 2013.
