When Did the Yellow Line Appear on Football Fields

The superimposed yellow first down line wasn’t always shown to the public watching football. In fact the superimposed yellow first down line appeared on televised football games for the first time this week back in 1998. Seems like seeing the score on the screen and stats was something that was always on the television but even those we’re not a staple to every game you watched.

As we watch from home the producers and broadcasters job is to give you a better viewing experience year after year.

Also this week was the only time Michael Jordan appeared on Saturday Night Live.

Michael Jordan, fresh off his first NBA championship a few months earlier, hosted SNL’s season premiere as part of his de facto victory tour. This was an SNL cast with a lot of heavy hitters (it was the Myers, Carvey, Spade, Sandler, Hartman, Meadows, Farley, Rock, Schneider crew). They were all on the trajectory toward becoming major stars, if not already major stars in their own right — but, stardom-wise, all were still magnitudes of order below Michael Jordan.

David Spade has even said it was difficult to rehearse during the week because of the line of people asking Jordan to sign things.

Lebron James and Charles Barkley are the only other two NBA stars to appear. We believe if SNL was filmed in Los Angeles then we would’ve been able to add Magic Johnson and Kobe Bryant to this list.
