An open-air ballpark located in the Bronx of New York City, Yankee Stadium primarily elves as the home field to Major League Baseball’s New York Yankees.

The stadium was opened in 2009 to replace the original Yankee Stadium. The Yankees had played most of their 85 years in existence at the old Yankee Stadium.

It’s the most expensive stadium ever built, and was plagued with controversy since the idea of the stadium was even conceived. From source of funding for the project, to its final location, the debate was heated for much of the time up until, as well as after the stadium opened.

The stadium is located one block north of where the original Yankee Stadium used to sit.

History

• Construction of the stadium took just under three years to complete. Ground was broken on August 19, 2006 and opened April 2, 2009.

• Yankee owner George Steinbrenner began pushing for a new stadium as long ago as the early ’80s, only a few years after the original Yankee Stadium had underwent renovations.

•In 1988, the current mayor of New York, Ed Koch, agreed to make taxpayers pay the $90 million on a second renovation to original Yankee stadium which included amenities like more luxury boxes and restaurants.

• The Yankees ended their first season at the new Yankee Stadium with a World Serie win over the Philadelphia Phillies in six games.
